On June 17, 2014, partner KAREN LIM spoke as a panelist on the American Bar Association webinar “Branded Products and Celebrity Likenesses in Expressive Works: Surveying the Legal Landscape.” She discussed the shifting boundary between permitted and infringing uses of trademarks and branded products in parody.

KATE LYON DAYTON joined our firm in July as an International Associate. Most recently, Kate was an Associate with Colucci & Umans. Kate received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2007, where she served as Articles Editor for the Georgetown Immigration Law Journal. She received the CALI Award for Legal Research & Writing and served as a Law Fellow for Georgetown’s Legal Research & Writing Program. Kate also graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Scripps College in 2002, with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Economics. In April 2012, Kate served as a Panelist for the IP Surprise Series: Yoga & Dance at New York Law School Institute for Information Law & Policy where she presented an analysis of copyright & trademark issues in the Bikram Choudhury v. Yoga to the People litigation.
HINDY DYM joined our firm in June as an International Associate. Hindy comes to us from Cooper & Dunham LLP where she was an Associate. Hindy received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 2006, where she was on the Dean’s List and served as Member (2004-2005) & Associate Editor (2005-2006) of the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, magna cum laude, from Brooklyn College in 2003. While at Brooklyn College, Hindy was on the Dean’s List and was awarded a New York State Merit Scholarship for Academic Excellence and a Brooklyn College Scholarship for Academic Achievement. In the 2013 issue of New York Super Lawyers, Hindy was named as a Rising Star for Intellectual Property Litigation. In addition to being admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey, the U.S. Federal District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the District of New Jersey, and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, Hindy is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
MARITZA C. SCHAEFFER joined our firm in August as an International Associate. Most recently, Maritza was an Associate with Alston & Bird, LLP. She also held a Summer Associate position at Alston & Bird, LLP prior to graduating from law school. Maritza received her J.D. with cum laude distinction from Brooklyn Law School in 2009, where she was on the Dean’s List and served as Notes & Comments Editor of the Journal of Law and Policy. She graduated cum laude from Skidmore College in 2003, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, and was named a member of Skidmore’s Periclean Honor Society and the Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society. In 2009, Maritza published a piece in the Journal of Law and Policy entitled “Contemporary Issues In The Visual Arts Realm: How Useful Are Creative Commons Licenses?” More recently, in June 2014, Maritza co-authored an article for the World Trademark Review Daily entitled “Federal Circuit Reverses TTAB and holds that Cubatabaco can seek cancellation of COHIBA mark.”
